Good afternoon,

Here is your weekly Homelessness Project update!

This week, I continued meeting with local nonprofits and touring their facilities. Thank you to Chris Kelley with the Salvation Army and Marilyn Green at Helping Hand Clinic for allowing me to come and learn more about your organizations.

This was also the first week of initial subcommittee meetings. Low Barrier Shelter Committee met on Monday evening, and Resource Development Committee met on Wednesday morning.  I have included the highlights from each meeting below:

Low Barrier Shelter Committee

  • Before we heavily discuss building new shelters, we should see if existing local shelters would be willing to drop their barriers to help more people.
  • Definitely believes we can have a “White Flag” shelter in place by winter.

Resource Development Committee

  • We need to identify what resources Sanford already has. If multiple organizations are doing the same things, maybe resources could be combined.
  • Need a clear plan and framework in place before we can solicit and/or receive funding.

In addition, I have attached the meeting notes from both committees to this email for you to read over if you want a more detailed view of what was discussed.

The other four subcommittees will be having their first meetings next week. Data and Metrics will meet on Monday, July 24th at 11:30 AM. Service Provision Committee will also be meeting on Monday, but at 3:00 PM. Housing committee will be held on Tuesday, July 25th at 3:00 PM. Community Engagement Committee will be held on Wednesday, July 26th at 4:00 PM. All of these meetings will be held in the Buggy Building Chatham Street Conference Room at 115 Chatham Street.

Lastly, don’t forget about our next Task Force meeting! It will be held next Thursday (7/27) at the Gordon Wicker Room in the Lee County Government Center at 106 Hillcrest Drive. This meeting will be from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.  We will be providing a working dinner, so bring an appetite along with your enthusiasm.

I look forward to seeing you all there!
